Six beds, the whole house, a terrace facing the sea and the scent of salt in the air. A family villa for exclusive use, on the Ionian coast of Salento.
The family
Anna teaches at the primary school in Salve, Pierluigi is a builder. They inherited the house from Pierluigi's aunt, a lady who filled it with nieces, nephews and friends every summer and left it to sleep, shuttered, through the winter.
They restored it in 2020 with their own hands — Pierluigi the walls, Anna the curtains. They kept the old kitchen, the bathroom tiles, the cement-tile floor. Everything else was stripped out and rebuilt.
For four summers now they have let it to one family at a time. In the meantime they stay at the home of Anna's in-laws, a couple of kilometres further inland. They come back only to hand over the keys and to show you around.
The house
A linen sofa, two armchairs, a bookcase. There is a television, but it hides behind a cabinet door.

You step in through the garden door. The window looks onto the courtyard, where the scent of jasmine lingers all through June.
Cabinetry from 1985, a new hob. Pressure cooker, stone mortar, six-cup moka pot.
On the west side, covered. A table for six. Sunset around nine in the evening, in August.
Pescoluse, the Maldives of Salento. White sand, water shallow for fifty metres. A five-minute walk from the gate.
Where you'll sleep
White linen curtains, machine-sewn by Anna. Proper beds, mattresses replaced in 2023, cotton bed linen changed for every stay.

Half a day out with a fisherman from Marina di Leuca, along the little coves between Pescoluse and Castro. A swim in crystal-clear water, lunch on board.

Three hours with a local guide, discovering the sandy seabed and the little reefs of the Ionian coast. Suitable for children too.

Dinner at home with the day's catch, cooked by the fisherman's wife. Fresh fish, local wine, a warm family atmosphere.

Two hours at sunset on board, from the Pescoluse shore to the lighthouse at Santa Maria di Leuca. Aperitivo on board included.
